Our History
Croatan Animal Rescue & Sanctuary (C.A.R.S.) was formed in June 2006 as several animal lovers looking to fill a void in the animal rescue community. Not only to rescue animals in need of a home, but also as a sanctuary for animals who have found a permanent home with us. In January 2008, we received our 501(c) 3 status. The purpose of Croatan Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is to rescue, rehabilitate, and place into permanent homes, cats and dogs in need and to educate the public on the benefits of spaying, neutering, and responsible stewardship of cats and dogs. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit group that relies on volunteers to help homeless animals find their permanent homes. We also provide alternative solutions for helping pets and their people overcome difficult solutions.
Currently, we have over 120 cats and dogs, including adoptable pets, permanent residents, and injured pets. In 2009, we took in 52 cats and 17 dogs; we placed 39 cats and 13 dogs into forever homes.
As a new group, we are growing. We have recently completed the building of a cat house with a door to a completely fenced-in “outside.” This cat heaven was initially funded by the estate of Ms. Rhea White, a true animal lover. In the plans are a dog run and additional“outside” cat areas. Of course, we will need funding to help us complete all that we’d like for our animals.
If you are interested in donating to us, please remember that it is tax deductible!
